Context:

The Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police jointly conducted Operation Mahadev in the forests near Dachigam National Park, resulting in the elimination of three terrorists, including the alleged mastermind of the Pahalgam terror attack. One of the other terrorists was reportedly involved in the Sonamarg Tunnel attack.


About the Pahalgam Terror Attack (April 2025):

  • Location: Baisaran Meadows, Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir
  • Incident: A group of tourists were ambushed, resulting in 28 civilian deaths.
  • Responsibility: Claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
  • Global Response:
    • TRF has been designated by the United States as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity.
  • India’s Response:
    • Launched Operation Sindoor in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows the Right to Self-Defense.

Sonamarg Tunnel Attack & Strategic Significance:

Z-Morh Tunnel (Sonamarg Tunnel):

  • Length: Approx. 12 km (including the main 6.4 km tunnel, egress tunnel, and approach roads)
  • Purpose: Ensures all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, bypassing avalanche-prone areas.
  • Travel Time Reduction: Cuts travel time from Gagangir to Sonamarg from several hours to ~15 minutes.

Zojila Tunnel (Upcoming):

  • Length: 14.2 km, under construction.
  • Goal: Connect Sonamarg to Leh, boosting NH-1 efficiency.
  • Combined Impact:
    • Reduces route distance from 49 km to 43 km
    • Enhances speed from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr, ensuring year-round mobility to Ladakh.

Operation Mahadev marks a significant step in India’s counter-terrorism efforts in J&K, targeting high-profile operatives behind major attacks.
