Context:

A group of 34 Indian students has been flagged off to Japan to participate in the Sakura Science Programme 2025.


What is the Programme?

  • Officially called the Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science.
  • Run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
  • Started in 2014 by Japan; India joined in 2016 and has been a regular participant.
  • Involves countries from Asia and Africa such as India, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia.

Aim of the Programme

  • Promote scientific curiosity and a global outlook among students.
  • Encourage cultural exchange and strengthen ties with Japan.
  • Provide exposure to Japan’s scientific progress and cultural traditions.
  • Build a network of young innovators and leaders across countries.
